CocoPallet makes price competitive, sustainable export pallets from coconut waste. These pallets are affordable to make as we use waste streams as feedstock and use the lignin in the coconut husk as binder instead of synthetic resins. CocoPallets are 100% bio-based and bio-degradable and a good example of the circular economy. By replacing wooden pallets, we prevent the cutting and transport of millions of trees. There is a need of over 2 billion export pallets/year (= 200 million trees) in Asia and Latin America and an abundance of wasted coconut husks. CocoPallet is very scalable and will have a big impact on our enviornment. We create value in the beginning of the supply chain by buying the coconut husks from local farmers.
CocoPallet contributes to a substantial reduction in deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, pollution and material waste. The pallets comply to the ISPM15 norm for Pest Control without costly and toxic Methyl-Bromide or Heat Treatment. CocoPallet is nestable and can therefore save 70% space during storage and transportation reducing cost considerably.
A pilot production cell has been built and the production technology is currently being finetuned.
The first production facility will be located in Indonesia and hopefully be operational in Q4 2018. It will have an initial production capacity of one million CocoPallets/year. It is our ambition to produce five million pallets per year and more.
The project is supported by Wageningen University, the European Institute of Technology, many multinationals and thousands of coconut farmers.
